Why Anatomy Matters
Now that we’ve covered levels in Understanding Software Engineer Levels and Titles (L3–L7, IC vs EM), we’re ready for the next layer: what the company is actually paying you for that level.
The mistake is to hear “$180k total comp” and immediately compare it to another “$180k total comp.” Those two packages can feel very different depending on:
- how much is guaranteed cash,
- how much is performance-based,
- how much is equity,
- when the money arrives,
- whether equity can actually become cash,
- and what benefits reduce your real expenses.
Think like an engineer: parse the object before you compare it.
offer = {
base,
bonus,
equity,
signOn,
benefits,
location,
timing,
risk
}
In the next lesson, we’ll zoom into gross monthly income. Here, we’re building the offer vocabulary you need before doing any math.
