Language Gotchas Practice

Now that you've finished Pattern Recognition Drill, you can usually choose a reasonable algorithmic direction. The next interview risk is smaller but still real: language behavior that looks obvious until it is not.

Language gotchas show up as quick code-reading questions:

  • "What does this print?"
  • "Why is this condition not matching?"
  • "Where should this filter go?"
  • "Why did this query duplicate rows?"
  • "What edge case breaks this?"

This lesson is a practice bridge into the Language And Frameworks section. We will use SQL-flavored examples because SQL makes several gotchas visible: NULL, filtering order, grouping, and joins.

By the end, you should be able to answer gotcha questions with a simple rhythm: 1. Predict the result. 2. Name the rule. 3. Identify the edge case. 4. Give the safer version.

Upcoming language-specific cheat sheets, starting with Python Interview Questions Cheat Sheet, will use the same habit: do not just memorize trivia; practice explaining behavior.
