Why Target First

**Before you polish a resume, choose a bootcamp, or apply to 80 jobs, you need a career target.**

This is the first lesson in the course, so we’re starting with the highest-leverage question: what kind of software job are you actually aiming for?

A vague goal like “get into tech” creates vague actions: random tutorials, random applications, random portfolio projects, and random disappointment.

A useful target gives you filters:

  • Which skills matter most?
  • Which jobs should you ignore?
  • Which projects belong on your resume?
  • Which interview style should you prepare for?
  • Which companies are realistic next steps?

Later in this section, we’ll compare learning paths in Best Way to Learn Coding: CS Degree, Bootcamp, or Self Teach? and explore role types in Jobs in Coding: Types of Programmer Career Paths. For now, we’re building the map those decisions depend on.
